They no longer will be able to eat at Pappadeaux, Pappas Burger, Pappasito's, Pappas Bar-B-Q or a combined location of Dunkin' and Baskin Robbins. Starting Friday, travelers passing through Hobby will see temporary eateries until the two companies can fully set up their permanent restaurants. The city said Wednesday that 300 of Pappas' 400 employees at the airport have been hired by the new companies, with the remaining 100 hired on by Pappas or other jobs. LaTrelle's, a Houston company that started with a bakery at the airport in the 1980s, won half of the contract last year. Areas, a company new to Hobby, will take over the food-and-beverage scene at the airport. Pappas was working to shutter eight restaurants at the airport Thursday into Friday, after two separate judges rejected the company's requests to stay in the terminals while its lawsuit plays out. The statement said Pappas has ignored repeated reminders of its contractual obligations. "Such removals are contractually impermissible, cause damage to the airport facilities and would inevitably cause customer service disruptions as the airport switches vendors." "However, Pappas is also seeking to dismantle and take away other key fixtures, such as three compartment sinks, that are bolted or otherwise “permanently” affixed to Hobby Airport," the statement reads. In response, the city Legal Department issued a statement saying under its contract Pappas is allowed to take away "removable" fixtures.

The city sent a default notice to recover the costs of some of the disputed fixtures, which Pappas said would affect its credit. At a hearing last week, lawyers for the two sides argued over sinks, refrigerators and water heaters. Pappas and the city had clashed over the fixtures in court. The behavior of the city continues to be disgraceful. "The city is working on behalf of Areas to forcefully acquire expensive equipment without paying. "We were working extraordinarily hard to take out all removable equipment when our team was met by the head of airport security and law enforcement who instructed them not to remove equipment that was purchased by Pappas Restaurants," said Christina Pappas, the company's marketing director. The company said it was exploring its legal options. The restaurant group was required to be out of the airport Thursday night after losing its 20-year concession rights in a bitter fight with the city over the procurement process that ended with another company winning a $470 million, 10-year contract to sell food to travelers at the airport.Īs Thursday's transition got underway, however, Pappas said airport security and police interrupted the process. Pappas Restaurants accused the city of using law enforcement Thursday to prevent it from taking expensive equipment it had purchased, including dishwashers and sinks, as it worked to move out of Hobby Airport by the end of the day.
